Review of The Consolations of Philosophy - Alain De Botton

Just after seeing and getting mightily impressed with Alain De Botton at the Guardian Hay Festival (see my critique) and his potential to engage with a crowd about philosophy in a digestible way, I decided to study his book 'The Consolations of Philosophy'.

Previously Alain had released the novels Kiss and Inform, Essays in Like and The Romantic Movement, ahead of dropping the storytelling model with How Proust can transform your life. ADB has kept his faith in telling it how he sees it with The Consolations of Philosophy.

As an individual who likes a difficult study from time to time I was a tiny sceptical about this book Right after reading that it was somewhat dumbed down philosophy. Yet then once again I've often felt that the upper echelons of philosophical debate is afflicted with a tendency to turn stated debate into an workout in etymological prowess. The beauty of this book is De Botton cuts to the chase with outstanding clarity of which means mixing old believed with the anxieties of contemporary culture.

I enjoyed his unapologisingly damaging opinion of Friedrich Nietzsche and his influence more than Hitler's anti-semitic ethos. His comparison of Socrates as an unpopular outcast who maintained his own beliefs provides the reader hope of triumph below adversity and his evaluation of Seneca and how his heartbreak philosophy can aid our own understanding of our own romantic anxieties was nostalgically believed provoking.

Seeking back more than time philosophical believed has stimulated and therefore shaped the pinnacles of modern day believed and spread to additional folks who in a previous age would in no way have had the chance to find out from the superb thinkers. However several people today believe philosophy is only for the elite largely since they are nonetheless segregated by modern day professors of believed who seem to surreptitiously hide away from attempting to educate the masses Adore Alain De Botton is attempting to do. Perhaps it is pretentiousness, Possibly it really is arrogance or Possibly they do not want to stick their neck out for want of failing a recognition contest Really like Socrates.

Alain in my opinion is being just rewards for his persistence, I very advise this book and I am keen to see exactly where his thoughts take him to subsequent.

My entire philosophy is be your greatest self, it really is what I do for a living at Leicester Hypnotherapy & Peak Efficiency Coaching.

So be your most effective self.
